Fourth of July at Rock Creek Horse CenterRock Creek Park Horse Center summer day camps offer opportunities for youth ages 5 through 14 years, an old active and healthy place to develop their horsemanship skills and build personal confidence. Teen and Adult Riding camps are scheduled in the evenings for campers 15 years old and above. Campers learn in a safe, relaxed and fun atmosphere through demonstrations, hands-on barn activities, and riding lessons. Campers are instructed from the first day on safety skills around a horse. They learn essentials about horse behavior and also experience important lessons in horse care through grooming, tacking, and specially designed games. Instruction includes lessons on anatomy, color/breed and markings, which is reinforced through creative craft projects.

We welcome the youngest riders, 5 through 8 years old, in our Pony and Friends afternoon camp (3:30-5:30), and campers 9-14 years old in our Day Camp (9:00-3:00). Note: Students need to meet the age requirement by the start date of their camp session. These age groups align with our year-round instructional program, and reflect physical and emotional development levels, as well as the ability to focus and recall information, all of which combine to form the foundation of a safe and constructive riding experience. The inclusion of 8-year-old campers in Pony & Friends is a change from previous years. We are prepared to work with current students to consider appropriate placement. Please call 202-362-0117 and/or email your specific request to .

Summer Camp at Rock Creek Horse CenterSummer camp riders represent all levels of riding ability, from beginner to the more advanced. Experienced campers might expect to hone specific skills and strengthen overall riding confidence. Intermittent riders, those who attend camps and barn days, will work to regain rusty skills and build new ones. Those with little to no experience will find pleasure in learning the basics of riding. All campers (Day Camp and Ponies & Friends) are evaluated on their riding skills on the first day of each session in order to be placed into an appropriate level riding group for the week. Our evaluation of a camper's riding level at the end of camp will be kept on file for one year if requested to be used should a student seek placement in one of our group lessons, a benefit valued at $50 if requested outside the camp venue.

Note: Age Ranges for Camps
A student must meet the minimum age requirement by the start of the selected camp session.  Siblings may not register for the same camp session unless they meet these age minimums.  Note that our Summer 2015 age ranges for the day camps have changed:  Day Camp starts at 9 years old, and Ponies & Friends Campers starts at 5 years old. We are prepared to work with current students to consider appropriate placement during this transition year.  Please call and/or email your specific request to and 202-362-0117.   Camp registrations will be checked for age at the time registration is received.  Campers found to be in the wrong camp section or session will automatically be canceled unless prior approval has been granted. Should an incorrect registration be found after the 30 day refund period, the registration will be canceled and a 20% administrative fee charged.

The curriculum teaches the young rider to gain confidence and have fun with horses, while emphasizing barn and horse safety. Students will be grouped in ability levels on the first day of camp. The decision to ride off lead line will be at the discretion of the instructor. Students will also learn hands-on about grooming and tacking, be exposed to horse anatomy, color/breed and markings through games and craft activities, and practice barn safety through games and daily routines. Endurance Camp
This special two-week intermediate/advanced level camp (see FAQ) explores endurance riding, a variation of competitive trail riding. Under close supervision, campers will learn the principals of trail technique and safety. They will have the unique opportunity to train one-on-one with their mounts, using structured strength building methods as well as participate in a final endurance test. This is an intermediate level camp. Current students should be riding at least at the I1(b) level; others should contact the Programs Manager for further assessment.

Eventing Camp 1
The United States Eventing Association calls combined training, or eventing, the triathlon of equestrian sports incorporating the disciplines of dressage, cross-country and show jumping. This introductory camp, geared toward intermediate/advanced riders, breaks down the principals of each division and explores the culture of the sport. Current students should be riding at least at the I2 level; others should contact the Programs Manager for further assessment.

Eventing Camp 2
Building on the skills gained from Eventing Camp 1, Eventing Camp 2 focuses on preparation for a “Super Chicken” event, a light-hearted variation on One-Day Eventing. In order to register for Eventing Camp 2, riders must attend Eventing Camp 1, or obtain special permission through the Programs Manager by demonstrating appropriate skill level and knowledge of eventing.

Beginner Riders Camp
For teens and adults interested in gaining a hands-on experience with grooming, tacking, and riding. This introductory camp will incorporate instruction on ground care, horsemanship, ring work and trail riding. Perfect for those interested in learning to ride and would like an across-the-board experience.

"Like a Bike" Camp
This refresher camp is tailor made for riders who used to ride regularly... but it's been a while. Ease back in with this low-key flat camp where all questions are fair game and all exercises will be approached gently. This camp is appropriate for students who warmly remember riding English at the walk, trot and canter.
