Summer Camp at Rock Creek Horse Center

“Thank you guys so, so much for all these amazing teachers, ponies, and wonderful fun.”

- Day Camper

Fourth of July at Rock Creek Horse CenterRock Creek Park Horse Center summer camps offer youth and young teens an active, healthy, and safe place to develop their horsemanship skills, including fundamentals of balance, harmony, rhythm and style. Through interaction with horses, on the ground and in the saddle, campers learn subtleties of communication and ways to work in a team - with people and horses. The camp experience also includes activities that take advantage of RCPHC's location in Rock Creek Park.

The overall experience fosters physical fitness, empathy, responsibility and self-control, as well as creativity and a sense of adventure.

Campers at Rock Creek Park Horse Center learn in a safe, relaxed, and fun atmosphere through demonstrations, hands-on barn activities, and riding lessons. Campers are instructed from the first day on safety skills around a horse. They learn essentials about horse behavior and also experience important lessons in horse care through grooming, tacking, and specially-designed games and practices. Instruction includes lessons on anatomy, color/breed, and markings. Learning is reinforced through creative craft projects and activities taking advantage of Rock Creek Park's natural beauty.

The Program

We welcome campers from 5 1/2 years old to 14 years old in our two camp venues, Day Camp and Ponies and Friends Half-Day Camp. The groupings reflect physical and emotional development levels, as well as the mental discipline to focus and recall information, all of which combine to form the foundation of a safe and constructive riding experience. The camp age distinction aligns with our year-round instructional program. If you have any questions about age requirements or programs, please call 202-362-0117 or email horsecenter@guestservices.com. Students need to meet the age requirement by the start date of their camp session. (See FAQs for more discussion of camp ages.)

  • Ponies & Friends Half-Day Camp, ages 5 1/2 to 8 years old, runs from 9:30 am to 12:00 pm. There is no extended care for P&F Camp.
  • Day Camp, ages 9-14 years old, begins at 9:00 am and ends at 3:00 pm. Extended care is available for Day Campers until 5:30.
  • Horseback riding is a daily part of the camp programs. Day Campers receive a morning lesson in a skill-level appropriate group and an afternoon activity involving horses, totaling appropriately two hours of horse related activity. Ponies & Friends Half-Day campers receive a daily group lesson in addition to ground activities that develop a young rider's understanding of horse care and psychology.

Summer Camp at Rock Creek Horse Center

Summer Camp participants represent all levels of riding ability, from beginner to the more advanced. Experienced campers might expect to hone specific skills and strengthen overall riding confidence. Intermittent riders, those who attend camps and barn days, will work to regain rusty skills and build new ones. Those with little to no experience, including the Pony and Friends campers, will find pleasure in learning the basics of riding and horse care. From the first day, campers are paired with an appropriate level school horse to ride, groom and tack. Through this experience, campers have the opportunity to bond with their horse, challenge themselves, cope with occasional disappointment, and feel the excitement of triumph.

The camp experience also includes activities that take advantage of RCPHC's location in Rock Creek Park. Here in the woods, campers can watch the clouds, find the owl hiding in the trees, follow the bunny rabbits in the meadow, or play with a new set of friends and create memories. Campers explore DC's urban park on foot and horseback to experience the hidden gems right in our own backyard. They explore the basics of horse health and the roles and responsibilities of the professionals who keep this facility humming. The park and horses are a great combination to spur thoughts of wonder and fantasy made possible through games on and off horses, storytelling, and the weekly costume parade for the Day Campers. Washington summers can be hot and humid, but under the canopy of Rock Creek Park, we explore fun activities with our horses, learn some neat science about horse health, and cool off with water games and serious equine care - like horse baths!

These week-long sessions (Monday through Friday) begin at 9:00 AM and end at 3:00 PM. Campers ride in one 45-minute (approximately) riding lesson each day (grouped by riding level), and participate in games on horseback, walks and rides on trail, and a final day costume parade, averaging two hours a day in direct horse-related activities. They also take part in fun and instructional barn and ring games and other recreational activities, guided by specially developed weekly themes. Campers' creativity is encouraged in decorating horse shoes to keep, cyanotypes, drawing and other craft activities. Extended Care for Day Campers is available from 3:00 to 5:30 PM for an additional fee ($150 week; $30 day). TThis is supervised, less structured time in a relaxed atmosphere. Campers can have their snacks, play games, help in grounds maintenance, and support end-of-day barn chores. Field trips to the adjacent Nature Center are also offered. There will be no Extended Care on Wednesday, July 4. Campers are encouraged to sign up at the time of registration (full week only) but may also sign up the first day of camp for week/selected days.

Note: Day Camp ends promptly at 3:00 PM. If campers are not picked up by 3:30 PM, they will automatically be enrolled in the Extended Care ($30 per day). Campers remaining after 5:30 PM will be charged an additional $30.

Ponies & Friends Camps are for young children who love horses and want to learn about them. These week-long (Monday-Friday) morning camps begin at 9:30 PM and end at noon. The curriculum teaches the young rider to gain confidence and have fun with horses, while emphasizing barn and horse safety. The camp experience includes daily riding, primarily on lead line, in order to develop confidence, balance and coordination, and essential skills to move to more direct control of the horse. Students will be grouped in ability levels on the first day of camp. The decision to ride off lead line will be at the discretion of the instructor. Students will also learn hands-on about grooming and tacking, horse anatomy, color/breed and markings through games and craft activities, and practice barn safety through games and daily routines. Each week incorporates a Friday afternoon showcase for parents, followed by a fruit party and special guest appearance.

All campers are required to follow the rules of the camp, and Rock Creek Park Horse Center reserves the right to expel any camper for serious misconduct and to refuse to accept any person it judges to be incapable of participating in the program.
